Credendo opened its 2026 webinar series with the launch of the 2026 edition of the Global Risk Atlas, offering an in depth look at the major geopolitical, economic and sustainability risks shaping the world. The session brought together leading experts to provide analysis on shifting global dynamics, with particular attention to the USA and Latin America and critical raw materials.

The event began with an introduction from Credendo’s Deputy CEO Nabil Jijakli, who outlined the central themes of this year’s Atlas. He emphasised the increasingly volatile political landscape, noting persistent conflicts, geopolitical fragmentation and pressure on global alliances. Sustainability remains a long term challenge, with the hope that innovation will bring solutions to solve this issue. He also highlighted renewed scrutiny of the future role of the US dollar in global markets.

The first keynote speaker, Professor Tanguy Struye de Swielande of UC Louvain, examined the enduring relevance of the Monroe Doctrine in a multipolar world. He described how major powers – including the USA, China, Russia and India – are increasingly asserting spheres of influence as multilateralism weakens. Focusing on the Western Hemisphere, he explained how US policy under the current administration reflects a strategic desire to secure dominance in the region, driven by geopolitical competition, access to vital resources and the need to safeguard supply chains. However, he noted that inconsistent decision making and transactional diplomacy risk undermining long term US objectives.

Jolyn Debuysscher, Country and Sector Risk Expert at Credendo, provided a comprehensive assessment of evolving risks in Latin America. She observed that the region has returned to the forefront of US foreign policy, marked by a more forceful approach involving sanctions, coercion and explicit military posturing. Key issues include the crises in Venezuela and Cuba, heightened election related tensions, surging crime rates and complex trade relationships within the region. She also noted that while some countries remain vulnerable to US pressure, others – particularly larger economies that trade little with the USA – are better positioned to resist it.

The webinar concluded with insights from Strategic Advisor Patrick Van den Bossche of Agoria, who addressed Europe’s wish for independence regarding critical and strategic raw materials. He outlined the impact of the green transition on global metals demand and detailed EU initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic production, refining and recycling capacities. Finally, he highlighted the European Commission’s ambition for diversification, investment in strategic projects and strengthening critical mineral supply chains, with Belgium playing a significant role in European recycling and refining capabilities.

Credendo’s next webinar, scheduled for 23 April, will focus on the Middle East with a special spotlight on Türkiye in view of the Belgian economic mission to Istanbul and Ankara in May.
